Puppy Scams – The red flags

Puppies bring joy and companionship into our lives, but unfortunately, scammers exploit our love for these furry friends. Puppy scams are on the rise, and it’s essential to recognize the warning signs to avoid falling victim to these heartless schemes. This blog article will guide you through common tactics used by puppy scammers and how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Understanding Puppy Scams

Puppy scams typically involve fake advertisements for puppies for sale. Scammers post appealing photos of puppies online, often on legitimate-looking websites or social media platforms, to lure potential buyers. They promise to ship the puppy after receiving payment but disappear once the money is sent. In other cases, they may ask for additional payments for unforeseen costs, such as shipping or vaccinations, continuing to deceive the victim until they realize there is no puppy.

My Moodles pups come vaccinated and health check – there is never extra payments outside of the agreed sale price. I also provide a rebate for fixing (neutering) when the pup is of age if the owner wishes to do so.

Tell-Tale Signs of a Puppy Scam

  1. Unusually Low Prices: If the price of the puppy is significantly lower than the market rate, be cautious. Scammers use low prices to attract buyers quickly. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There is a lot more involved with legitimate breeders , proper animal welfare and high ethical standards add costs to breeding. Also in some cases the pup might not be a moodle at all, but advertised as such due to the x-breeds popularity. You might end up with a pup that sheds hair everywhere and yaps all the time and not moodle traits as you where after.
  2. Lack of Information: Legitimate breeders provide detailed information about the puppy, including its breed, age, health status, and the parents. Scammers often provide vague or inconsistent details and avoid answering specific questions about the puppy. I am always a phone call away – i also own a local family tourism business -so its easy to cross reference me to other entities by searching online.
  3. Stock Photos: Scammers frequently use stock photos or stolen images from other websites. Conduct a reverse image search to check if the pictures appear elsewhere online. If the same photos are used in multiple ads, it’s a red flag. Pups are quite hard to take good photos with – so images that look perfect might even be AI made – or shot in perfect lighting then sold as stock photos which the scammer will use.
  4. No In-Person Visits: A reputable breeder will allow you to visit the puppy in person. Scammers, on the other hand, will make excuses to avoid face-to-face meetings. But be aware even meeting face to face can still trap into a scam – we know of someone that met at the front of a house to look at the pup – took the deposit and then disappeared – the real owners of the home didn’t know anything about the pups. As i am are located in Esperance i am always happy to do facetime calls if visiting isn’t an option and as to make a potential owner feel safe with their deposits.
  5. Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often create a sense of urgency, claiming that other buyers are interested or that the puppy needs a home immediately. This pressure tactic is designed to make you act hastily without thoroughly researching. You should never offer up more than a small deposit . I ask for less than 5% deposits which are refundable if you change your mind, a deposit shows some commitment and so that i am holding the pup in your name, until its ready at the age for its adoption.
  6. Unusual Payment Methods: Be wary if the seller requests payment through unconventional methods such as wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. These payment methods are difficult to trace and often non-refundable. I always ask for a deposit into my bank account.
  7. Poor Grammar and Spelling: Scammers frequently operate from foreign countries and may have poor command of the language. Look out for emails or messages with numerous spelling and grammatical errors. I am not the best speller but its pretty obvious the style and type of writing used.
  8. Unverified Testimonials: Fake breeders often use fake testimonials to build credibility. Check for reviews and testimonials from multiple sources. Genuine breeders usually have a presence on reputable platforms with verified customer feedback. Places like gumtree can be fraught for scammers, a distinction from a long term seller that will have a good service feedback on their profile compared to a recent new gumtree member with less than 12 months on the site – is cause for extra caution.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Research Thoroughly: Investigate the breeder or seller before making any decisions. Look for reviews, testimonials, and any potential complaints. Check if they are affiliated with recognized breeding associations.
  2. Ask for Documentation: Request health records, vaccination certificates, A legitimate breeder will have no issue providing these documents.
  3. Visit the Breeder: If possible, visit the breeder’s location to see the puppy and its living conditions. This visit can provide reassurance that the breeder is genuine.
  4. Use Secure Payment Methods: Use credit cards or other secure payment methods that offer fraud protection. Avoid wire transfers or other untraceable payment options.
  5. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, trust your gut. It’s better to walk away from a potential scam than to lose money to a fraudster.
  6. Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a suspected scam, report it to the appropriate authorities. This action can help prevent others from falling victim to the same scheme.

Conclusion

Puppy scams are a sad reality, but by being vigilant and informed, you can protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes. Always research thoroughly, verify the legitimacy of the breeder, and use secure payment methods. By staying alert and following these guidelines, you can ensure that your journey to finding a new furry friend is a safe and joyous one.
